Mast KM was a 2-year-old boy diagnosed with hypospadias in Kenya. The boy’s mother contacted another patient’s mom who was successfully treated at hypospadias foundation. KM’s mom consulted us when the boy was 6 months old, however they decided to get the surgery done in Kenya itself. Unfortunately, the hypospadias surgery in Kenya was not successful, hence KM’s mom reached out to us again after the first
surgery. Post successful repair for KM’s hypospadias at our centre in Navi Mumbai, mother sent an email to us.
Mother’s email in her own words
“We thought KM’s hypospadias was a simple problem and rather than going to India we planned to have the surgery in Kenya itself and the surgery was done on 7 th Dec 2021. Unfortunately, it was not ‘entirely successful’ as the doctor told us. KM was still peeing from where he used to pee, it is not a fistula, just a bigger pee hole. The doctor said the chordee was less than 30 degrees, so he did not correct that. The surgery was to correct the hypospadias instead (this decision was made on the operating table). When he went into theatre, he was to correct the chordee. I have attached the report from the doctor who performed the surgery, pictures before and after the surgery. My biggest worry is that ever since the surgery, he has not had an erection and yet I used to notice them before. I appreciate any assistance accorded”.
At Hypospadias foundation, we managed to do a teleconsultation with the family. Pre surgery hormonal evaluation was done because the size of the penis was small. Fortunately, the hormone tests were normal, and we could prescribe hormonal injections to normalize the size of the penis. Following hormonal injections there was improvement in size of the penis. We planned the corrective hypospadias repair in two stages, 1 year apart. The family was very happy with the result of the hypospadias surgery. He had no complications, and he was able to pass urine in a single straight
stream with no pain.
